UK Heatwave
Health Warnings Issued as Temperatures Soar Across England and Wales
July 16, 2025
LONDON, UK — The United Kingdom is experiencing an intense heatwave this week, with temperatures expected to rise above 32°C in many parts of England and Wales. The UK Met Office has issued amber weather alerts, warning of possible health risks, especially for the elderly and young children.
Southern regions, including London, Kent, and Sussex, are predicted to see the hottest conditions, while Manchester and Cardiff are expected to reach around 30°C by Thursday.
“This level of heat is unusual for mid-July,” said Dr. Amelia Fraser of the Met Office. “We’re advising the public to stay hydrated, stay indoors during peak hours, and avoid unnecessary travel.”
Hospitals across the UK are preparing for a potential increase in heat-related illnesses, such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and sunstroke. The NHS has also advised people to check up on vulnerable neighbours and relatives.
In some areas, schools have adjusted schedules or cancelled outdoor activities. Transport networks have warned of possible rail delays due to track overheating.
๐ Public Safety Tips from the NHS:
-
Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
-
Stay indoors between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
-
Use fans or cool cloths to lower body temperature.
-
Wear loose, light-coloured clothing.
-
Keep blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day.
Climate scientists have linked the heatwave to ongoing global warming trends, noting that extreme summer temperatures are becoming more frequent in the UK.
