Community Responds After Single-Vehicle Crash in Somerset: Volunteers and School Staff Praised
Police Confirm Single-Vehicle Crash in Somerset; Emergency Volunteers and Local Community Praised
Authorities have confirmed that a serious single-vehicle crash occurred on Thursday at approximately 15:00 BST in the Somerset area.
According to Chief Superintendent Mark Edgington, the incident involved only one vehicle, and emergency services responded quickly to the scene to provide assistance and support to those affected.
Volunteers from Exmoor Search and Rescue Applauded
Chief Supt Edgington offered heartfelt appreciation for the 24 volunteers from the Exmoor Search and Rescue Team, who were among the first to respond.
“These volunteers carried out essential first aid triage at the designated rest centre,” he said. “They brought not only medical expertise but also specialised ropes and search skills, which were critical during the initial response.”
Their swift action helped to stabilise the situation and ensure that anyone who required immediate care received it promptly.
Local Pub Opens Doors as Emergency Shelter
A special mention was also given to the staff at the Rest & Be Thankful pub in Wheddon Cross, which was quickly transformed into a temporary rest centre for those involved or affected by the incident.
“The kindness and quick thinking of the pub staff made a real difference,” Edgington noted. “By opening their doors, they created a safe and comfortable space where people could receive support and shelter.”
School Staff Commended for Community Support
Additionally, teachers and staff at Minehead Middle School were recognised for their calm and compassionate responses.
Chief Supt Edgington praised the school for effectively communicating with parents and carers, helping to ease anxiety and provide clear updates during what he described as “a difficult and distressing time.”
“They showed true professionalism by supporting not just the children but also the wider school community,” he said.
Investigation Ongoing
While further details about the cause of the crash have not yet been released, police are continuing their investigation. At this time, authorities have not provided any additional information regarding injuries or the number of individuals involved.
The incident highlights the importance of coordinated community responses in times of crisis, and authorities have emphasised their gratitude for the exceptional teamwork shown by emergency services, volunteers, and local residents.
