CHIAVENNA, ITALY – A body has been discovered during the search for missing British man Matthew Hall, who disappeared while hiking in the Italian Alps.

The recovery was made on Wednesday evening near the Cross of Daloo, a scenic viewpoint located high above the town of Chiavenna, where the 33-year-old had been staying before his disappearance.

Originally from Hull, Mr Hall had been reported missing on 9 July. Italian authorities have confirmed that his family has been notified of the discovery.

💬 Tributes From Friends

Sam Jackson, a close friend who travelled to Italy to assist with the search, said the group was heartbroken by the outcome.

"We’re completely devastated. He was an incredible friend and we all loved him deeply," Jackson said. "At least now, we can bring him home — where he belongs."

🚨 Search and Recovery Operation

Mr Hall was last known to be staying at B&B Ploncher. He had planned an eight-hour mountain hike, but later messaged a friend to say he had lost his way and was taking a break.

According to Lieutenant Gim Toni De Masi, a body was located at 7:00 PM in a steep crevice near the area where Mr Hall had sent his last known message.

Due to the terrain's difficulty, a helicopter was deployed to assist with the recovery operation safely.

Mr Hall’s mother arrived in Italy on Wednesday, and his father is expected to arrive by Friday, police said.

🧭 Massive Search Effort

Over a dozen of Mr Hall’s friends and colleagues joined local search teams in Italy to help locate him. The operation involved:

• Three helicopters

• Multiple mountain rescue squads

• Police

• A specialized drone team

Despite their high expectations, the outcome fell short of their expectations.

Sam Jackson shared that Matt had a passion for snowboarding and skateboarding and was a loyal supporter of Hull KR, his hometown rugby league club.

He also praised the local police, rescue teams, and Chiavenna community for their exceptional support.

“They found our friend,” Jackson said. “We’re forever grateful for the efforts made here.”

🏔️ Solo Journey and Employer Statement

Mr Hall began his solo hiking trip on 5 July and was scheduled to return from Milan to Manchester on 12 July. He was known as a capable and experienced hiker, familiar with mountainous regions and rugged paths.

In a statement, Mr Hall’s employer, Quickline, shared their sorrow:
